New York state championships preview

Posted On: Friday, June 06, 2014

New York is known for its excellent lacrosse teams throughout the entire state.  Out of the 50 teams in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, 12 teams come from the Empire State, second only to Maryland (13).

Tomorrow, Saturday, June 7, the NYPHSAA wraps up three state championships in Classes A, B, and C.  The Class A championship features Fayetteville-Manlius and 17th ranked Massapequa.  In Class B, Jamesville-Dewitt meets 20th Yorktown.  Class C sets Bronxville up to face 46th Cazenovia Central.

Both Fayetteville-Manlius and Massapequa were eliminated early in last year’s playoffs; however both teams have displayed that they disserve a state championship to finish their impressive seasons.  After a semifinal overtime victory over Fairport, Fayetteville improved to an 11-game win streak.  Massapequa shocked the lacrosse community in its 23-9 victory over 23rd ranked Niskayuna.  With both teams knowing how to rise to the occasion in tough situations, Saturday’s game will surely impress.  The teams meet at Hofstra University for an 11am faceoff.

After over ten years without a state championship, Yorktown’s remarkable season lands them in state championship game a 17-5 on the year.  The Huskers will face Jamesville-Dewitt, 18-2 this season.  The Red Rams’ high scoring offense has pushed them past many talented teams, scoring at least 17 goals in each of their last six games.  Yorktown’s defense might be the answer for Dewitt’s attack, keeping opponents at six goals and under in its last seven games.  The balance of talent among both teams will yield an exciting end to the season.  They followed the Class A game at Hofstra at 1:30pm.

In a repeat of last year’s Class B state championship, Cazenovia Central squares off against Bronxville.  Last year, Cazenovia took the title, winning 13-11, and the Lakers look to do it again.  Expect another tight game as both teams have dominated both offensively and defensively this year.  Having only allowed 23 goals in the past seven games, Bronxville has outscored their opponents by 93 goals in that time frame.  Cazenovia shows that it knows how to win with consistency, with a 34-game win streak, dating back to last season.  This state final rematch features two teams with a lot of history.  Will history repeat itself, or will a new champion be crowned?  Find out after the Class B game at 4pm at Hofstra.
